What Is Adult Peer Support Training?

The state of Kentucky defines Peer Support as: "The Peer Specialist Service is a structured and scheduled therapeutic activity with an individual client or group, provided by a trained, self-identified consumer of mental health services. A Peer Specialist guides clients toward the identification and achievement of specific goals defined by the client and specified in the Treatment Plan." (KYDBHDID, 2024)

To become qualified, an Adult Peer Specialist (APS) completes 30 hours of training and passes a written test. The job of an APS is not to replace current clinical/mental health staff but to offer additional and/or alternative options to help people in their efforts to recover. Regular supervision is required and each qualified Kentucky Peer Specialist must earn at least 6 hours of continuing education each year.

The Peer Support training that we are offering is a 30 hour course that covers a broad spectrum of subjects. Things such as the history of behavioral health, what a Peer Support Specialist is, along with the role of Peer Support in behavioral health are just a few of the very important topics the curriculum covers.

To participate in our training classes, an individual must complete an application for the training course and pay the entrance/enrollment fee. There are limited spots for each session, and you will not be considered placed until both items (application and payment) are complete and accounted for. If you have paid but the class spots are full, you will be placed in the next available session. THERE ARE NO REFUNDS FOR MISSED CLASSES OR FAILURE TO COMPLETE.
